Jets Focused on Improving

Two years ago, the Jets entered their bye week in a state of chaos and at a serious crossroads. They were coming off an ugly home loss to a bad Browns team that left them 4-4 at the midway point and with some players grumbling about the new coaching staff.

After a week off and what coach Eric Mangini called “self-scouting” from everyone (players and coaches), the Jets came out of that bye week and upset the Patriots 17-14, a win that propelled them to go 6-2 in the second half of the season en route to a playoff berth.

Last season, the Jets entered their bye week riding a six-game losing streak and a 1-8 record.

After a week off and more self-scouting, they came out of that bye week and shocked the Steelers, 19-16 in overtime, winning two of three, and three of their final seven games.

This year, the Jets’ bye week didn’t come after a calamity or a long losing streak.

It came after a 56-35 victory in which Brett Favre threw a career-high and franchise-record-tying six TD passes.

So, the $64,000 question as the 2-2 Jets returned to work yesterday following their four-day bye week hiatus, is this: What lies ahead this year after the bye week?

“Hopefully,” Jets LB Eric Barton said yesterday, “we can keep that trend up.”

That trend under Mangini includes marked improvement for the last two seasons, particularly on defense.

Consider these telling numbers:

Defensively, the Jets entered their bye week in 2006 ranked 24th in points allowed and finished the season having allowed the sixth-fewest points in the league. They, too, entered that ‘06 bye week ranked 29th in overall defense and finished 20th.

Last season, they entered the bye ranked 27th in points allowed and finished 17th and they entered it ranked 30th in total defense and finished 18th. They had nine sacks in the first nine games of the season and, after the bye, had 20 in the last seven games.

What’s the secret?

“During the course of the season you can kind of lose sight of the things you do well and the things you do badly, and they kind of wash away,” Jets S Kerry Rhodes said yesterday. “But after [the] bye you get to look at everything. I think we’ve done a nice job of focusing on the things we want to work on, that we want to be our core things.

“The biggest thing after the bye is we came out and did what we do best and not let other teams dictate what we do.”

Jets TE Chris Baker said: “We just really focused on the things we did well and haven’t done well and started to hone in on the things we did well and eliminated some of the things so we’re not so multiple.

“There’s always self evaluation, looking at certain things like, ‘I can do this better,’ or, ‘If I do this, it will make this play go better.’ ”

Music to Mangini’s ears.

“The thing I stress to the players is the importance of going back and looking at things individually, starting with yourself and being brutally honest and saying, ‘What can I improve and have I worked on those things that I need to improve?’ Am I where I should be at this point and, if not, how can I get there?’ ” Mangini said. “Unless you are objective, unless you are honest, then you don’t make much progress.”

‘Gang of Four’ about to unleash more drama

It’s a big weekend in the best division in the NFL. The Gang of Four in the NFC East – Dallas, Philly, Washington and the Giants – have had that perfect confluence of excellence and intrigue emerge early in 2008.

And this week, the interest spikes.

In Philly, the coulda-been 4-0 Eagles are hosting the stunning Redskins and hoping to avoid going sub-.500. The ‘Skins, meanwhile, would love a chance to validate their fairly stunnin’ 26-24 win at Dallas last week with another “you better take us seriously” performance in Philly.

The defending Super Bowl champion Giants – still trying to get respect – host the Seahawks.

Finally, this weekend’s episode in the “Dallas Cowboys: 2008″ reality series has the Boys trying to bounce back from the loss to Washington while also dealing with the fallout of last weekend’s bomb-lobbing of Terrell Owens. And who’s coming to town? The Cincinnati Bengals and the NFL’s other biggest clown receiver, Chad Johnson.

But while the Cowboys court and revel in the hype and chaos, the most compelling story may be the Giants who are trying to avoid selling the drama.

NFL Preview - New England (2-1) at San Francisco (2-2)

Hopefully for the sake of the San Francisco 49ers, J.T. O’Sullivan learned something in the month he was employed by the New England Patriots.

O’Sullivan, who will be under center when the Pats visit Candlestick Park on Sunday, picked up a paycheck as a member of the Pats from Sept. 5 to Oct. 2 of the 2006 season, when he was on the practice squad and served as the de facto No. 3 quarterback behind Tom Brady and Matt Cassel.

Roughly two years after being released by New England, and following subsequent stops with the Panthers (2006), Bears (2007), and Lions (2007), the journeyman has developed from an unknown taxi-squadder into an NFL starter. O’Sullivan, now at the controls of the high-octane passing attack run by San Francisco offensive coordinator Mike Martz, has thrown for 240.8 yards per game and forged a solid 90.0 passer rating for a team that was the lowest- scoring club in the NFL a year ago.

What’s more, O’Sullivan’s 49ers can call themselves a contender in the NFC West, where their 2-2 record is good enough for a first-place tie along with the Arizona Cardinals.

Belichick responds to Davis’ tampering charge

Patriots coach Bill Belichick responded to claims by Raiders owner Al Davis that the Patriots tampered with receiver Randy Moss in 2007.

Davis told reporters yesterday that the Patriots had a private workout with Moss while he was still a member of the Raiders. Belichick said today that wasn’t the case.

Speaking with the Globe after his daily press conference, Belichick said:

“I’ve told the story a hundred times. The first time I talked to Randy was after I talked to Mr. Davis, Saturday night/Sunday morning before the [draft in April 2007], the second day of the draft. I don’t know what this workout is. No idea.

“Like I told Mr. Davis when I talked to him that Saturday night, we were talking about the draft pick. I joked ‘why don’t you send us back the fifth that we gave you for [receiver] Doug Gabriel last year, and he ended up on your team at the end of the year? If you had any courtesy, you would do that.’ We laughed. Some trades work out, some don’t.”

Asked if there was any Patriots workout with Moss before the trade was completed on April 29, 2007, Belichick responded:

“No. The first time I saw Randy in person was when he came in, and when I called him Saturday night after I talked to Mr. Davis. He flew in late Saturday night, got here early Sunday morning.”

Raiders finally fire Kiffin, consider promoting assistants

The inevitable became reality Tuesday when Lane Kiffin was fired by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis on Tuesday.

In a one-paragraph release, the team said “Lane Kiffin has been released as head coach of the Oakland Raiders for cause. ”

Sources told ESPN that Kiffin was fired via the telephone and without pay.

Raiders offensive line coach Tom Cable has accepted the head coaching job. Cable was introduced by at a news conference later Tuesday. Cable was among three coaches interviewed by Davis on Monday night; the others were offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and special consultant Paul Hackett.

Plaxico Burress fined a ’stunning number’ of times in New York

Recently-suspended Giants WR Plaxico Burress has been fined a stunning 40-50 times during his four seasons in New York, according to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer. The fines have been levied for various offenses, mainly related to Burress’ tardiness for meetings and treatments. Considering that Burress has played in 50 games for the Giants, the total number of violations is mind-boggling. (It should be said that Tom Coughlin is a task-master who fines players for being early to meetings (his meetings begin five minutes early), so getting a few fines probably isn’t out of the ordinary for some players. But 50? That’s habitual.)

Glazer’s sources also tell him that Burress is often insubordinate towards Coughlin, frequently “tuning him out” during conversations and ignoring direct orders. This news isn’t altogether surprising; Plaxico has long been known for his diva-like attitude, something that gets glossed over because of the successes his teams have had.

Burress has accepted the fines without incident, writes Glazer, but was taken aback by the suspension because “he just wants to play football.” What Plax doesn’t seem to understand is that playing football is a full-time job that includes going to meetings, getting treatment for injuries and listening to coaches. His new $35 million contract doesn’t just pay him for Sundays, but for the other six days of the week as well.
